A 16.33% ROI.

And all at Pinnacle prices!

Demetrio Giotti has been beating the European basketball markets since 2016 and for the last 3 1/2 years, he has been a SBC Free Tipster – whereby all his selections were available to follow free of charge if a member of the Smart Betting Club season.

Having proven his success and ability and made those following him some excellent profits, for the new season, he will become a Premium Service with a very limited number of members allowed to join.

Another Free Tipster Delivers For Members

Demetrio joins services such as No Foto Needed who have started out as Free Tipsters before progressing on to become Premium Tipsters.

Demetrio made 64.3 points profit for members during his free tipster spell – all at the sharpest lines that are accessible for every bettor, right through from beginners to those at Stage 5 of their betting journey.

Demetrio increased his exposure, demonstrating his consistent edge, whilst SBC Members made some serious profits – everyone wins!

Despite Demetrio’s selections now needing a subscription to access, we still have other top quality Free Tipsters that come with SBC Membership, such as:

  • Kieran Ward 13/2 to 8/1 – the long-running (and very successful) service focussing on a price ‘sweet spot’
  • Kieran Ward Irish Racing – another service from Kieran where he uses his algorithms and specialist knowledge to find value in the Irish racing markets
  • The Betting Man – expert tips from a professional punter sent straight to your inbox

More On Demetrio: The Record & Getting On

Demetrio’s service is perfect for those of you who want a consistently profitable tipster to drive bank growth and best of all, there are many ways to make these tips pay!

The 16.33% ROI record is mainly based on advised prices with Pinnacle but these odds are beatable with soft bookmakers and even have an 8% edge over closing line prices with the sharp bookmakers.

Moneyline and handicap bets compliment each other perfectly, with longer-priced winners from the former producing large profits and shorter priced winners from the latter helping to turn over money and reduce variance.

All of this means that the P & L graph for Demetrio Giotti has been going in one direction, as you can see below!

If you would like to learn more about the service, how Demetrio finds his edge and much more (including a bet-by-bet record) you can do so here.

Exclusively Available With SBC

To protect prices and ensure maximum value for followers we are employing a membership cap for Demetrio Giotti, with just 50 places available.

This may change in the future, but this service’s popularity and the demand we anticipate means that taking this approach is necessary to protect members from significant price drops.

5 Stages of Profitable Betting Follow-Up: Send Us Your Questions!

As an accompaniment to the launch of our brand new ‘5 Stages of Profitable Betting‘ resource, myself, Rowan and Josh recorded a recent podcast to talk about our betting journeys, sharing our knowledge about each stage along the way.

We have been delighted with the response to this pod and, as a result, we have decided to do follow up to answer the many questions that have come in since.

So far, we have had many queries, including:

  • The best tips on getting started as a total newbie?
  • What order (and how) to work on the ‘soft’ bookmaker platforms to delay restrictions and obtain as much profit as possible?
  • Which tipsters are best for those who want to pay for expert advice?
  • Recommended bankrolls for each stage?
  • Free tipsters at The SBC and how some of them are different from ‘the norm’?
  • Using Bet Brokers, How to choose the right one and accessing Pinnacle odds.

If you would like to listen to that podcast (for the first time, or again!), then please click here for a direct link.

We would love to have more questions to answer so if any of the things we talked about left you wanting to know more, then please get in touch. You can do this by Tweeting us @SBCInfo or by emailing josh@smartbettingclub.com.

We look forward to hearing from you!

Discipline & Diversification: Our Latest SBC Member Interview

In our latest SBC Member interview we spoke to Abel, an experienced bettor who has used various SBC services and advice to build a varied and profitable portfolio.

As with our other recent interviewees, Abel has plenty of practical pointers that can help others in their betting journey. Discipline, diversification, diligent record keeping and an understanding of variance have all been key to his successes and learning from his experiences can only help the rest of us in the SBC community!

Abel also shares his insight into some common issues that face our members, demonstrating why adapting as you move through the 5 Stages of Profitable Betting is so important!

How long have you been a SBC Member?

I’ve been a Smart Betting member for nearly 4 years.

What made you sign up?

I was into my betting for a while before I signed up. I used to make nice profits from Cheltenham but my betting was erratic and had no real structure to it which resulted in wasted profit. I knew it couldn’t continue so I started looking for tipsters online.  I stumbled across yourselves on Twitter and I am very pleased I did! It taught me the important principles of being a disciplined, successful bettor.

Did you do any betting or following of tipsters before you joined up?

I only really bet on horses and football before I joined. I would listen to podcasts and follow the big ‘main stream’ tipsters like Andy Holding. I never recorded results. My best mate is very astute with jump racing and taught me some tricks of the trade.

What sports do you bet on?

The majority of my bets are on horse racing and golf. I also have tipsters for football, dogs & basketball.

How much of your betting is your own/how much is following tipsters?

I’d say 95% is tipsters and 5% is me. I treat my betting as a side business and would rather follow the professional than my less informed choice!

What services do you use (both SBC & non-SBC)

From SBC, I follow Learn Bet Win (Dec is God!), Weekly Golf Value, Betting Man, Magic Multiples & 80/20 Racing.

I also use a couple of tipsters that haven’t been proofed by SBC. I’d back a lot more if I wasn’t worried about losing accounts.

How did you choose those services?

When choosing services, I read the info you provide in detail, and try and do a bit of my own research. I am now solely on the lookout for tipsters that can offer a decent ROI on the exchanges.

Do you have any favourite service(s) or memorable win(s)?

Learn Bet Win was one of the first tipsters I followed when I joined your service. Declan is a magical man who has provided me with consistent profit over the 4 years I’ve been with him and I can’t recommend him enough. I know that over a year I will always make a lovely profit.

I am also very keen on Weekly Golf Value who have given me some lovely pay days.

Which level of betting do you feel that you fall into in our 5 Stages?

I still have a few soft bookmakers left but don’t think that will last too much longer. I’m moving more to the exchanges and thanks to you guys I’m finding a way to make it profitable. The restrictions are a massive headache –  without them I’d give up my day job!

Do you have any tips for new bettors who are starting out on their journey?

My tips would be to try and not look at the short term but look at the long term. Negative variance happens, trust the process. Even the best tipsters have losing runs – spread your bank widely and don’t put all your eggs in one basket.

What are your plans for the future?

My plans are too keep finding ways of profiting from the exchanges while keeping soft bookmakers on my side… some how… for as long as possible!!!

🎧SBC Podcast #59 (Part 1): 5 Stages of Profitable Betting

In the latest SBC Podcast I have something a little different for you.

Instead of interviewing a ‘traditional’ guest, I was joined by two of my SBC colleagues, Rowan and Josh, to discuss our new resource – The 5 Stages of Profitable Betting.

(The 5 stages takes you from beginner through to expert and all points on the ‘betting journey’ from using regular bookies to exchanges and sharp bookies/brokers)

Many betting podcasts (including ours) focus on interesting stories, guests’ opinions or in-depth discussions about services. Whilst I love making (and listening) to this content, what we have here is practical advice for bettors of all levels, with our personal experiences referenced at every stage.

We start off with advice for new bettors and progress through to (inevitable) account restrictions, using sharp bookmakers, increasing volume and so much more.

Whatever stage of betting you are at – beginner through to hardened pro – we hope that there is something inside for you!

Please be aware that there is a Part 2, where we discuss specific tipsters for each stage. To access this content, you will require a SBC Membership.

You can listen to Episode 59 (Part 1) now via Apple /Spotify / Google / YouTube and all other major podcast directories (search Smart Betting Club)

An in-depth chat about how to maximise your profit

In this episode Rowan, Josh and I discuss:

  • Our first tipster experiences and how we started out
  • Understanding how risk appetite, time, account availability and your own mentality will affect which services are best for you
  • Getting to know yourself as a bettor
  • Betting banks, research and setting yourself up for success
  • Recording results and different ways to measure tipster services
  • Drawdown analysis and why it can help put losing runs into context
  • Sports markets and how they are different
  • Starting out
  • Bookmaker accounts – ‘dos and don’ts’
  • Tipsters – what to look for and what to avoid
  • Diversifying, building and more advanced betting
  • Managing bookmaker accounts when restrictions bite
  • The different types of betting mediums, from soft and sharp bookmakers through to exchanges and shops
  • The challenges of betting in higher volumes with lower ROIs
  • Adapting over time and the challenges that this presents

This was an enjoyable podcast to record and we hope that you get something from what we discussed! ‘The 5 Stages of Profitable Betting’ is introduced on this page with more detail about what is inside the site for members.

Part 2 – Discover the services we recommend

The good news is that we have also recorded a Part Two, where we go into more depth and share specific services that are suitable at each stage.

This includes some of the tipsters we have either followed in the past or do so at the moment. We talk about why we chose them, how best to use them and which stage(s) they are suitable for.

One Year In: An Interview With An Australian SBC Member

We recently posted two interviews with two Smart Betting Club Members – one who won over £15,000 using the Bookie Bashing Horse Racing Tracker (all on a restricted account!) and another who shared the story of their betting journey so far.

In this week’s interview, we spoke to a SBC Member from Australia who has been with us for just over a year.

With our Five Stages of Profitable Betting resource launched and a special SBC Podcast being released later this week, we feel that this type of practical resource is essential as we can always learn from each other in this ever-changing industry.

Our interviewee has some excellent tips for choosing the right tipsters, maintaining accounts and adapting as circumstances change. He will be back soon with some ‘tech tips’ so look out for any fresh blog posts!

How long have you been a SBC Member?

I have been with SBC for 12 months now.

What made you sign up?

I came across SBC on Twitter and started listening to the podcasts and reading the free reviews available. The reviews were more detailed than anything I had come across before and I had learned quite a bit from the podcast guests.

Did you do any betting or following of tipsters before you joined up?

I had built up a bankroll through matched betting and arbitrage for a few years. I had followed a couple of form and ratings services that I used to create my own systems and strategies, but it was harder and less successful than I thought it would be.

What sports do you bet on?

Golf and Horse Racing predominantly, but also tennis, greyhound racing and football.

How much of your betting is your own/how much is following tipsters?

At the moment it is about 50/50. I bet larger stakes on the bets from tipsters, but I have a few of my own horse and greyhound racing strategies that generate around 100 bets per day. The high volume of those selections allows me to bet reasonably small stakes yet still achieve solid bank growth.

What services do you use (both SBC & non-SBC)

I use quite a few services. In terms of tipsters, I subscribe to Winner Odds, Betaminic Over 2.5 Goals, Winabobatoo, Optimum Racing, Golf Insider and The Value Machine. I also follow free tipsters such as Ben Coley and Tour Tips, as well as 80/20 Racing and Achievable Value through SBC.

Another subscription I have is with BF Bot Manager, which I use to place my horse and greyhound racing bets into the live Betfair market instead of taking the BSP. I also use the FairBot Software for any trading and matched betting I do.

How did you choose those services?

I always read the SBC reviews of each service and if the tipster has appeared on the SBC podcast, I will listen to that. The odds movement analysis is one of the critical things for me. I don’t want to have to get my bets on within a couple minutes of the tips being sent, especially since I follow quite a few different services.

This made golf an obvious choice, which I bet win-only on Betfair, as well as horse racing which I use the Bot Manager to bet into the live Betfair market.

Do you have any favourite service(s) or memorable win(s)?

My favourite service was definitely Winner Odds, which made me $9,000 in roughly six months. After six weeks I was down over $1,000 but stuck with it and only had two losing weeks since then. I am also a big fan of 80/20 Racing. My favourite bet would have to be Nick Taylor in the Canadian Open who I backed at 90 on Betfair. I only checked the bets after the event and was pleasantly surprised!

Which level of betting do you feel that you fall into in our 5 Stages?

I would say I have moved into stage 5. 90% of my betting is done through Betfair. I can get very small stakes with one or two bookmakers which has made following high-volume services such as Winner Odds and The Value Machine a possibility.

Do you have any tips for new bettors who are starting out on their journey?

I would encourage anyone to build up a bankroll through matched betting and arbitrage. Aside from making solid profits, you also get experience using Betfair and reading market movements etc. Similar to that, try to sustain your bookmaker accounts for as long as possible as they are extremely valuable. Betting to outlandish stakes, particularly on obscure markets or standout prices, will likely get you limited very quickly. It is much better to make small, steady progress over a long period of time, in my opinion.

What are your plans for the future?

I think in time most of my betting will be on horse racing and golf. I am transitioning all my golf betting to Win-Only, as I have found betting in the place markets to be time consuming and frustrating due to lack of liquidity, particularly on the DP World Tour.

I suspect I won’t add too many more tipsters to my portfolio, instead just increasing my stakes so that the amount of bets I am placing is manageable.

Over £500,000 profit for this long-term SBC Member!

We recently posted an interview with a Smart Betting Club Member who won over £15,000 using the Bookie Bashing Horse Racing Tracker (all on a restricted account!). This content proved to be very popular with members so we have spoken to another long-term winner about what they do, how they get on and their plans for the future.

This success story is larger in scale (as you will see below) and begins in 2005, showing how our members can adapt with the times as we do!

What do you like most about the Smart Betting Club service?

100% genuine service, no affiliations, massive data on all tipsters including odds availability and ability to actually get on. Also tipsters who are profitable at BF SP, which is basically all I can use.

How many tipster(s) have you followed in the past and who do you follow these days – including those that SBC recommend?

Back in the day I remember following Lawrence from Equine Investments and I was doing £1,000 a point! Looking back is strange cause I can’t manage a score now! The best years we’re around 2006-2008. Now I follow 7 tipsters including PGA profit and the Bookie Bashing Racing Tracker, Golf and Football Coupon methods. Weekly Golf Value, Hanbury Racing and Edwards Tips are others that I follow after reading about their services on The SBC.

What are your betting plans for the future?

I don’t work, this is full time (for now anyway!). The affordability nonsense is a nightmare but I will adapt. I travel a lot so like to leave the betting alone when away. I will continue to bet and I have runners for shops etc. and this is all I’ve known since I started back in 2005.

How much have you made betting since you joined the Smart Betting Club?

Around £525.000 over 18 years. 2005-2009 was where the main chunk came from, I could have anything on! They were slower to restrict obviously and there was no affordability nonsense.

What would you say to others considering an SBC membership?

I recommend SBC because they are a genuine tipster proving service, luckily I found SBC early and only have ever used them. It works hand in hand all the ‘so called best tipsters’ will only use SBC for proving unless they have something to hide! For example odds availability or overnight prices! SBC call them out for this behaviour there not just tracking profit their tracking accessibility and odds availability. If you want to make betting pay then you need to sign up to Smart Betting Club.

£15K win on a RESTRICTED account! A (very) Lucky 63!

Bookie Bashing is an SBC favourite. Football, golf, darts – they calculate fair odds and identify value bets for all of them.

The most popular of their tools is the fantastic Horse Racing Tracker, a core element of the Bookie Bashing site that we analysed in depth in 2022 (SBC Members can read that in SBC Magazine #127).

A database of over 2 million horses’ races, live feeds from both bookmakers and exchanges and true odds calculations for every runner make finding value easy – especially in the place parts of bets.

Each-way multiple betting lends itself perfectly to this tool. Bookies think they are ‘mug’ bets, small stakes can result in massive returns and even a handful of places can make you profit.

SBC Member Hits The Jackpot

SBC Members can get 25% off their first three months with Bookie Bashing (saving nearly £70!). This led one man to see what all of the fuss was about…

Using the tracker with the recommended each-way strategies has resulted in some excellent returns in his first few months. We caught up with him to ask a few questions about the tool, how he uses it and the filters that he would recommend to get the best out of it.

We also asked him about his day-to-day betting, how he uses SBC Services and how he plans to adapt moving forward. This is what he had to say:

Tell me about your recent big win and how exactly that came about?

I won just over £15k from placing an each way lucky 63 by using the Bookie Bashing Racing Tracker to identify my six horses. Two of the six won, both at 16/1, with the remaining four placing at odds of 6/1, 20/1, 33/1 and 40/1.

I won just over £15k from placing an each way lucky 63

You learnt about Bookie Bashing and their Racing Tracker as its one of the Hall of Fame tools we recommend. Assuming you have read our reviews on the service – how did you decide what type of bets to place and how long have you been doing it?

I’ve only been using the Racing Tracker for two months, as I was always hesitant of joining due to being restricted by the majority of bookmakers meaning I struggled to justify the subscription fee as I wouldn’t be able to use it to its full potential. However, as a long term reader of Rowan’s Bet Diary and listener of the BB Bashcast, I’ve been aware of the success others have had so finally decided to give it a go.

When I first joined I followed Rowan’s lucky 15 strategy sticking to horses priced between 2/1 and 25/1 but after a few weeks I realised that to win a significant sum with lucky 15s you’re reliant on winners. As the Racing Tracker is designed to identify value based on the place terms then you don’t want to be dependent on winners when that’s not what the tool is designed to do. I decided that lucky 31s and more specifically lucky 63s offered more potential for winning those significant 5+ figure sums from horses finishing in the places.

I also changed my odds filter to between 5/1 and 50/1 on the basis that you need those under 5/1 to win in order to increase the value of your bet. I’m sure my theory here is flawed in some way as you do get value e/w bets at low odds, but ,my thinking is a horse priced at 9/2 at 1/5th the odds would return £1.90 for a £1 e/w stake, so a loss of 10p. To my mind you’d be better off not including the 9/2 shot in your 50p e/w lucky 63 and just double your stake on the other five and place a £1 e/w lucky 31.

I also tend to concentrate on those horses with a high confidence rating as it makes sense to stick to the ones the tracker is confident about and after that it’s just a case of picking the horses with the highest EV.

You were able to utilise a restricted bookmaker account to make it pay out? Is this something you have done with other accounts and would you recommend it?

I only have access to two bookmaker accounts that at the moment (touch wood) seem to be unrestricted. The plan with Bookie Bashing is to use these accounts for as long as I can, but I also decided to have a go at getting some bets down on previously restricted accounts. On the account I won the £15k with, they would only give me 6p e/w on a lucky 63, however when I split it out into separate doubles, trebles, four-folds, five-folds and a six-fold they allowed just about my full 50p e/w stakes albeit it the six-fold was limited to 5p e/w.

On the account I won the £15k with, they would only give me 6p e/w on a lucky 63, however when I split it out into separate doubles, trebles, four-folds, five-folds and a six-fold they allowed just about my full 50p e/w stakes albeit it the six-fold was limited to 5p e/w.

Being restricted to pennies certainly made the win sweeter so it’s definitely something worth trying.

Any other notable wins using BB or other SBC recommended services?

The only other notable win using BB was a £2800 return from another lucky 63. There is a lot of treading water following this strategy so despite having success after only a couple of months, it is a strategy I imagine will require a lot of patience with over the longer term.

The other notable win that sticks in the mind was from a Northern Monkey bet in 2021 that won £12k when Bielsa hacked up in the Ayr Gold Cup. From memory it was quite a hefty single, and was also the 2nd leg of a couple of successful doubles.

What other tipsters/services do you follow – any that the SBC recommend?

I followed plenty of SBC recommended services over the past 5 years or so; Northern Monkey, SysAnalyst, Learn Bet Win and The Value Bettor to name a few but as I’m struggling with getting the bets down now I’m having to adapt and become more focussed on the exchanges. At the moment I’m trying out a few new tipsters and strategies that will hopefully pay dividends.

Aside from that big win, how else has the Smart Betting Club service helped you over the time you have been a member?

Finding the SBC has been the key that has enabled me to bet profitably over the past 6-7 years. The content they produce is second to none, and has provided me with all the information required to educate myself on how to bet profitably. Without the SBC and the tipsters they recommend, I’d be clueless!

Finding the SBC has been the key that has enabled me to bet profitably over the past 6-7 years.

What do you like most about the Smart Betting Club service and who would you recommend it to?

I’d recommend the SBC to anyone. It doesn’t matter if you’re just starting out and want to understand the basics, or if you’re a professional punter looking to add another string to the bow, there is definitely something for everyone.

What are your betting plans for the future? What might you do if and when your accounts get fully restricted and closed?

Restrictions have been a problem for a number of years now so I’m concentrating on finding edges on the exchange. It’s been trial and error for the past 18 months or but there are a few promising angles that will hopefully bear fruit.

The increasing affordability checks and the general hassle of using friends and families accounts means that route is probably no longer worth the effort so I’m running out of ideas.

I hear more and more momentum gathering for the black market, but it isn’t an area I’ve looked into too much yet. There is going to come a time though when that is the only option.

6 Tips For Following Racing Tipsters On Betting Exchanges

It is common knowledge these days that if making money betting on horse racing, you will at some point encounter difficulty with either your stakes being restricted or your bookmaker account being closed.

There is hope that this may change in the future with the discussions surrounding a minimum bet law, which are certainly gaining traction in 2018.

Yet until such a time as bookies either agree or are compelled to lay all punters a decent bet, one of the most popular places to bet without issue are the betting exchanges.

So, to help you understand more on how to maximise this, I have put together this updated guide featuring 6 tips for following racing tipsters on betting exchanges…

1) UNDERSTAND WHEN MONEY HITS THE RACING EXCHANGE MARKETS

As an exchange-only racing punter, it’s important to understand that the vast majority of money only starts to flow into most racing markets approximately 10 to 15 minutes before the off.

(I say most as there are some obvious exceptions such as at Cheltenham or other big race meetings, which will see larger sums traded earlier)

To showcase this, compare the amount of money traded on Betfair for each of these 5 races that took place on a pretty standard Monday afternoon’s racing.

I simply noted down the amount of money traded at 3 time points: 21 minutes, 11 minutes and 1 minute before the off for each of the 5 races, which you can see below:

content_EXCHANGES-IMAGE

Without exception, the most trading took place in the 11 minutes before each race started.

Take the 4.30pm race as one example – at 4.19pm, there was £60,925 traded yet come 4.29pm, this had jumped to £495,057.

Within 10 minutes an extra £434,132 had been traded – 87% of the entire market!

The knock-on effect of this is two-fold.

Firstly, it’s an understanding that most of the trading takes place during this time and when your exchange bet is most likely to be matched.

Secondly, it’s the knowledge that prior to the final 10 minutes, it is harder to get your racing bet accepted, especially if it’s based on advice coming from a popular tipster.

2) CONSIDER BETFAIR SP TIPSTERS

One of the simplest angles to make a profit on the exchanges is by following tipsters that make a profit at Betfair SP (after commission of course!).

They offer the easiest, most simple approach as once a tip comes in – you simply place the bet, stick in your stake at Betfair and walk away.

Although the number of profitable Betfair SP tipsters is growing, it’s a fairly small pool to choose from currently.

One profitable Betfair SP tipster I rate highly is the free ‘place laying’ tipster providing their advice for free to SBC members currently. The tipster is called ‘The Accountant’.

Simply put, he recommends you lay their horses NOT to finish in the place money in any given race. That is not to finish in the first 2, 3 or 4 of a race depending on the number of runners.

Over the course of more than 800 lays and risking no more than 3% of your betting bank on any advised price lay, this tipster has grown a bank of £1000 to in excess of £2,500.

This is after 5% Betfair commission has been deducted from each profitable lay.

Providing one simple angle for those of you after a simple exchange tipster for you to follow.

3) DON’T BET IF THE VALUE HAS GONE

One of the most fundamentally important points to consider when betting is that of obtaining value.

All successful punting is based on the concept of value betting and the idea that the odds for any particular bet are priced in your favour.

Therefore, the odds you take on a bet really matter.

If you can get 5/1 on a horse that should be 4/1, then you have a strong value bet.

Yet if the same tipped up horse at 4/1 is only available at 3/1 – the opposite applies.

If you constantly are taking too short a price on a horse, you will lose money.

Which is why it’s important to ONLY bet if the value is still there.

Many good tipsters recognise this and put up minimum value odds to make you aware of where the value cut-off point actually lies. They recognise that a tip might see market support and if it does, you know where to draw the line.

If restricted to exchange betting, look out for this and stick to the minimum value thresholds – they are there for a reason and they will guide you as to the prices to take.

And whatever you do – never place a bet if the value has gone.

4) RECOGNISE YOU WILL WIN SOME, LOSE SOME

Mindful of the need to take a value price, if exchange betting you must accept that sometimes you will miss out on a bet if the odds are too low.

Yet on the flipside, you might also get BETTER odds on other bets when the odds drift.

Whilst on occasions, you might miss out on a winning bet because you can’t get the right odds, on other occasions you will enjoy a bigger payout through this strategy.

If and when this happens, remember the logic behind it all and try to be as phlegmatic as possible.

All gamblers HATE missing out on winning bets, especially if they feel they should have been on it, yet they very rarely remember the times they missed out on a bet that lost.

My suggestion here is to consider keeping a record of each occasion you miss out on a bet (both winners and losers) or get a greater value price than you might have originally. Through this, you can track the ups and downs and see at a glance exactly how you have fared overall.

5) DON’T WORRY ABOUT DRIFTERS

Flowing on from this last point – don’t also get too bogged down by the idea that a ‘drifter’ (a horse whose odds get bigger as the race draws nearer) is no longer worth backing.

Racing pundits like to bang on about horses being weak or friendless in a market, yet the reality is they have no idea if this market move is significant or not. They are often just filling airtime.

If market support was so telling – everyone would simply lump on a horse at the first sign of it being backed in. Market support is no guarantee a horse is a ‘good thing’.

Unless there is clear evidence a horse has something wrong with it before a race, don’t be unperturbed by backing a ‘drifting’ bet.

Look at it instead as a chance to get better value. If you can get 10/1 about a tip advised as value at 6/1 earlier in the day – take it!

After all, unless the horse in question has a major problem – if a tipster you trust said that 6/1 is a value price, then 10/1 will represent a massive increase.

6) CAN’T GET MATCHED STRAIGHT AWAY? PUT IN A REQUEST

If you can’t get on a bet earlier in the day at a value price, you might also like to consider putting in a request to get matched on the exchanges later on that day.

There are two ways you can do this – requesting a price pre-race and also in-play.

Pre-race betting is easy – you set the odds you want to take and put the request into the market to hopefully be matched. If come the start of the race it isn’t matched, the bet is cancelled.

Putting a bet in the in-play market is different as it ensures the bet will also remain available throughout the race as it takes place.

When doing this, it’s important to be aware that you will ALWAYS be matched in-play on any bet that loses the race BUT there is no guarantee you will be matched on a winner.

Therefore, you do have to approach in-play betting with caution and it is best when used in conjunction with watching a race live and an understanding of racing in general.

You also might only want to leave a bet to be matched in-play, when the odds pre-race are very close to those you wish to take OR perhaps risking only half stakes.

Equally if you have a good knowledge of racing, you might want to make judgements based on the competitiveness of each race, the merits of each horse (does it prefer setting the pace or being a backmarker) and the distance run.
